If a current carrying conductor with current flowing from south to north is placed over a magnetic needle, the needle gets deflected westward. This is known as the SNOW rule:

S:South(direction from which current emerges)

N:North(direction to which the current is headed)

O:Over(the magnetic needle)

W:West(direction of deflection of needle)
